Hey everyone! Sorry about my none existance on dA. Time hasnt really been on my side lately and I havent had much time to draw. So this is my most recent art piece. Its a gift for on of my friends. I hope she likes it (must keep this quick) I hope you all like it
In portraiture critique has an extra dimension; the question of the skill of the artist is called into question by errors. In this case, the artist is obviously skilled, and there are only a couple of minor points I would want to tweak.
I personally would have put in a background that allows the right shoulder (left to us) to be defined without flatness. It currently moves too smoothly into flat white. Up in the top right corner of this scan is an area that looks like shadow on the paper - that would be entirely sufficient as a background.
The underside of the chin has a good reflection but the dark line there looks like too harsh a fold. Equally the joining of tendon to bone at the base of the neck looks a little harsh. The visible ear could probably be smoothed back a little, but it does not impact unless one looks at it directly.
These are all small things, however, and it is in general a good experience to present a critique that is all about small things. The general look is very good, and the form is drawn out exceedingly well in a greyscape. Eyes, hair, and major features look good. this is a portrait that is well executed by someone who has both worked on and thought about their craft.
this is pretty amazing i asked a friend on deviant art a little while ago what colour hair they thought was hardest to draw. i think he said black, what do you think?
thanks! I actually think it depends on the complexity of the hair as a whole. If the hair is messy and deshevelled then its hard to draw. If its sleeked back and tidy then its easier to draw.
